Resumo:
A sociedade da incerteza, pela sua nova economia global de consumo de informação, assume que a afirmação do poder das instituições passa pela exploração da imagem (da forma), sob os conceitos da virtualidade e da clonagem pós-industrial. A arquitectura assume a qualidade de liberdade do jogo tirânico da funcionalidade e da forma exemplar, segundo a qual, se permite a materialização por objectos autónomos da exigência de reconhecimento institucional e da normalização. Por transição da sociedade industrial para a da informação, a arquitectura tem-se provido da necessidade de fundamentos de uma nova utilidade dos seus objectos, fundada na capacidade de provir matéria mais sólida, pessoal e narrativa. A redutora capacidade de gerar incompreendida informação da contemporaneidade tem-se convertido também na potencialidade de afirmação da negação ao excesso do consumo, como se o século XX tivesse demasiada construção e demasiados objectos. Sustenta-se que o novo marco de referência da utilidade dos objectos de arquitectura na sociedade da informação estará afectado pela normalização da globalização, mas impõe a impossibilidade da neutralidade perante a banalidade que a sociedade do espectáculo ajudou a formalizar. O tempo move-se rápido na arquitectura, quando se perde a memória colectiva e a capacidade individual se restringe ao reconhecimento do instante. (Mário João Alves Chaves)

Abstract:
In a Society of Uncertainty, in a global economy fuelled by the consumption of information, it is assumed that every affirmation of power involves an exploitation of the image - of form. This assumption is itself by the ascendancy of form over content and by post-industrial notions of the infinite, unthinking repetition of the image.
This means that architecture has to act as a liberating force, a third way between the dual tyrannies of A utilidade dos objectos de arquitectura na sociedade de informação [Texto policopiado] liberating force creates objects whose autonomy exempts them from tribute to the Standard and the Officially Sanctioned. With the transition from the Industrial to the Information society, architecture was faced with the need to re-examine its own foundations in the search for something solider, something with more character, more narrative power.
More information reaches us than we can possibily absorb. This means that to manage this information we have to simplify it, and in doing so we distort it. But this same process of simplification can also be seen as a refusal, a way of saying is too much to consumerist excesses. In the twentieth century, according to this rationale of refusal, there were too many objects, too many buildings.
Despite its manifest shortcomings, however, twentieth-century architecture was also an efficient and legible expression of the social and individual mechanisms which it embodied.
Revolutionary it certainly was: but the twentieth-century will above all be remembered for having brought architecture into ill repute with its bickering over theory and vainglorious rhetoric about recasting mankind in its own image. So much was demanded of architecture that ultimately it was unable to deliver.

The author believes that globalisation will recalibrate the measure of utility in the architecture of the Information Age. We must, he argues, take a stance against the banality which the Society of the Spectacle and twentieth-century technology have spawned.
The affirmation of the institutional power in this Society of Uncertainty (through the new global economy of information consumption), derives from the exploitation of the image as cloning and virtuality).
Architecture as a quality of freedom, as a need for fundaments for a new utility of its objects. Architecture as ability to provide a language matter.
Time as instrument for the collective memory; ways in which the individuals unable to be neutral towards the show business society and 20th century industry. (Mário João Alves Chaves)
